Myanmar (formerly known and currently recognized by the US government as Burma) shares borders with China, India, Laos, Bangladesh and Thailand. In 1987 Myanmar was given least developed country status by the UN.  Incredibly undeveloped, Myanmar is still one of the poorest countries in the world.  Two-thirds of its children are malnourished and the majority survive on less than $1/day. Many have no electricity, no access to health care, and work day-to-day for their daily food.

Buddhism represents more than 80% of the population in Myanmar. It is very diverse ethnically, representing eight major national races and 135 sub-groups and tribes. Although freedom of religion is technically granted by the constitution, Christians experience intense persecution from religious and political majorities.

COUNTRY FACTS

Evangelical Christians make up less than 2 percent of the peoples of Myanmar.

Myanmar holds the #24 spot on the World Watch List for persecution of Christians.

Myanmar is a beautiful land with a rich traditional Asian culture. Unfortunately decades of ethnic strife have led to ongoing human rights violations, widespread poverty, and one of the longest running civil wars in the world.

Although the Burmese economy is one of the least developed in the world, it exports 90% of the world's rubies, not to mention precious stones such as sapphires, pearls and jade.
